Due to changing climates and demographics, questions of policy in the circumpolar north have focused attention on the very structures that people call home. Dwellings lie at the heart of many forms of negotiation. Based on years of in-depth research, this book presents and analyzes how the people of the circumpolar regions conceive, build, memorialize, and live in their dwellings. This book seeks to set a new standard for interdisciplinary work within the humanities and social sciences and includes anthropological work on vernacular architecture, environmental anthropology, household archaeology and demographics.

Do It Yourself investigates the history behind the current do-it-yourself craze in homebuilding and home repair. The origins of home improvement can be traced to the early part of the century when government loan programs placed home ownership within the reach of growing numbers of families, mass-circulation magazines began providing their readers with information about home remodeling and repair, and increasing numbers of Americans turned to the manual arts and handicrafts as leisure-time pursuits. World War II provided many Americans with the skills and confidence to undertake home-improvement projects on their own, and after the war, changes in the manufacturing and retail of tools and equipment created new possibilities for transforming one's home. As home remodeling became a central feature of domestic life and consumer culture, the |do-it-yourself| movement was born, coming of age in the baby-boomer 1950s and 1960s, when Americans created suburban paradises and reclaimed decaying urban centers. The text of Do It Yourself, which investigates topics ranging from women's roles in home repair to historic preservation, is a lively mix of illustrations -- including period photographs, magazine spreads, and advertisements -- and clearly written analysis of the trends behind these images.

A House is Not a Home PDF
By:Polly Adler
Published on 1953 by Univ of Massachusetts Press

Polly Adler's |house|--the brothel that gave this best-selling 1953 autobiography its title--was a major site of New York City underworld activity from the 1920s through the 1940s. Adler's notorious Lexington Avenue house of prostitution functioned as a sort of social club for New York's gangsters and a variety of other celebrities, including Robert Benchley and his friend Dorothy Parker. According to one New York tabloid, it made Adler's name |synonymous with sin.| This new edition of Adler's autobiography brings back into print a book that was a mass phenomenon, in both hardback and paperback, when it was first published. A self-consciously literary work, A House Is Not a Home provides an informal social history of immigrant mobility, prostitution, Jewish life in New York, police dishonesty, the |white slavery| scare of the early twentieth century, and political corruption. Adler's story fills an important gap in the history of immigrant life, urban experience, and organized crime in New York City. While most other accounts of the New York underworld focus on the lives of men, from Herbert Asbury's Gangs of New York through more recent works on Jewish and Italian gangsters, this book brings women's lives and problems to the forefront. A House Is Not a Home is compellingly readable and was popular enough to draw Hollywood's attention in the early 1960s--leading to a film starring Shelley Winters as Adler. The book has been largely forgotten in the ensuing decades, lost both to its initial audience of general readers and to scholars in women's studies, immigration history, and autobiography who are likely to find it a treasure trove. Now, with a new introduction by Rachel Rubin that contextualizes Adler's life and literary achievement, A House Is Not a Home is again available to the many readers who have come to understand such |marginal| life stories as a special refraction of the more typical American success narrative.

Two friends are inexplicably drawn to a carnival-like -orchid garden. A man works obsessively on restoring a mansion he has inherited. An urban dweller is haunted by the echo of cries in the night. A traveler is lured by highway signs directing him to a place that he has always known. The stories in Home, the follow-up to Mark Macdonald's acclaimed novel Flat, feature characters searching for truth and clarity in a world that is sometimes deceptive, usually miraculous, and often inescapable. Full of dark compulsions and seemingly irrational tendencies, Home is a place where all is not as it seems: authority figures defy reality, and fate takes charge as life and death become mere observances. Informed by terminal illness and a trust in the wonders of the world, these stories are about anxiety, foreboding, and a sense of calm resignation and peace with matters beyond our control. |An inventive, sometimes startling, work of fiction from a writer of formidable ability.|--Globe & Mail |These stories have the power to slip in and engrave lingering afterimages in the mind.|--Quill & Quire Praise for Flat: |Uncanny. . . . With a deadpan worthy of Kafka, and the eye of a satellite camera.|--Lambda Book Report |It's wonderful to read a novel and get such piercing insights from little things, described concisely.|--Toronto Star Mark Macdonald is the book buyer for Little Sister's, Vancouver's legendary gay and lesbian bookstore. His work has appeared in numerous anthologies and publications, including Quickies 2 and Carnal Nation.

Practical Kinesiology for the Physical Therapist Assistant PDF
By:Jeff G. Konin
Published on 1999 by Slack Incorporated

Practical Kinesiology for the Physical Therapist Assistant addresses the specific issues faced by the PTA student when studying the basics of human movement. By taking an introductory look at the foundation of biomechanics along with a clinical perspective of the application of skills, Jeff G. Konin has developed an outstanding text for the PTA classroom. The responsibilities of the PTA have grown considerably. The goal of this book is to provide the PTA student with knowledge to enable him/her to recognize normal human movement and how interruptions to that normalcy can cause pathological conditions. Initial chapters address terminology, biomechanical principles, joint structure and function, as well as muscle structure and function. An entire chapter is dedicated to providing valuable information on the principles of tissue repair. Subsequent chapters address individual body regions including: the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand, spine and posture, the hip, knee, and ankle and foot. The final chapter discusses gait and how the PTA should approach understanding this complex topic in physical therapy. An appendix on muscles is included as well as an appendix for the student solving biomechanical equations of the trigonometric type. Practical Kinesiology for the Physical Therapist Assistant is organized in a very clear and straightforward style and format. Each chapter follows a consistent, easy-to-use format, including learning objectives and end of chapter study questions. Precise illustrations throughout the book demonstrate concepts in the text. Practical Kinesiology for the Physical Therapist Assistant Laboratory Manual (150 pp, Soft Cover, 1999, ISBN 1-55642-419-1, Order# 44191, $14.95) complements this outstanding textbook. Written specifically for the student, this Lab Manual contains practical laboratory objectives, anatomical reviews, definitions, diagrams to be labeled, discussion questions, and classroom activities. A variety of learning tools provide a creative, fun outlet for the student to retain the material included in the textbook.
